About Himalayan Heritage

Himalayan Heritage is a platform facilitated by Pragya for cultural actors of the Himalayas - artists, performers, and those working for the preservation and promotion of culture.

The Himalayan region is a globally recognized bastion of biodiversity, as well as a rich repository of a diversity of cultures, lifestyles and traditions. This heritage is at once a treasure that enriches the region, although under severe threat of erosion, and an opportunity for the development of its people that however lies untapped. The erosion of the rich cultural and biological resources of the Himalayas needs to be addressed before the region loses a heritage built over centuries. Sustainable development initiatives must also make full use of the local knowledge, skills, resources, and leverage the comparative advantage of the Himalayan region. Valorization of the Himalayan heritage could serve as an effective strategy, building socio-economic value of the various heritage forms, transforming them into income generating activities.

Himalayan Heritage aims to promote access to Himalayan culture and enhance its understanding among the wider public. It also seeks to build solidarity among culture actors and workers of the Himalayas, and a support system for them, that can help them access their cultural rights, draw resources, and carry out effective advocacy.

Himalayan Heritage has a two-tier structure, with district level networks in 12 Himalayan districts in India, and an apex structure at the national level comprising representatives of all district networks, as well as some national level members. This body aims to carry out the functions of policy advocacy and work towards generating a regional cultural identity for the high-altitude Himalayan people and area.

The network spans all cultural sub-sectors, including performing and non-performing arts, handicrafts and handloom, language and literature, built heritage and natural heritage. Membership is open and broad-based.
